Dental Zirconia - Ivoclar (Zircad), Vita (YZ Zirconia).

YZ Zirconia YZ Zirconia

YZ Zirconia material is manufactured & distributed by a number of companies. Ivoclar (Zircad), Vita (YZ Zirconia), Glidewell Labs (Bruxzir), Cercon (Dentsply). And there are also the Lava & Procera Zirconia's(discussed elsewhere).

With more than one option available, Precision Dental Lab keeps up to date with trends that are occurring overseas. These trends indicate which are the good zirconia's and if they will be available in NZ.

About YZ Zirconia: (900-1273MPa)

  • Sometimes referred to as the Transformational-toughened Zirconia. It is unique among other polycrystalline ceramics in that if a crack should occur it squeezes in on that crack. This involves a high temperature tetragonal phase, conditionally stabilised at room temperature with yttrium oxide(3%-5%). Transformation, of the conditionally stabilised tetragonal zirconia grains, to their room temperature (monoclinic) form, occurs in response to the strain energy ahead of a growing crack. This tetragonal-monoclinic transformation is accompanied by a volume increase (approx 4%), decreasing the cracks ability to grow.
  • All Zirconia is milled in a soft state then sintered at high temperature.
  • The Technician then adds a compatible glass Ceramic for aesthetics.

Indications:

Anterior: Crowns, Bridges, Implants Abutments & Crowns.
Posterior: Crowns, Bridges, Implants Abutments & Crowns.

Cementation:

Conventional Cements.

Preparation Requirements

Anterior crown

  • 1.5–2.0 mm incisal reduction
  • 1.0–1.5 mm labial/lingual reduction
  • Round the internal line angles
  • Chamfer margin

Posterior crown

  • 1.5–2.0 mm incisal reduction
  • 1.0–1.5 mm labial/lingual reduction
  • Round the internal line angles
  • Chamfer margin

Preparation details

The optimal preparation is a shoulder or chamfered preparation with a circumferential step or .chamfer. The step or chamfer must be applied at an angle of >5° to the horizontal. The angle of the preparation to the vertical should be 4° or larger. The inside angle of the shoulder reparation must be given a rounded contour.

Example 1 / Example 2

Do not prepare teeth in the following way

We do not recommend a feather edge, as it does not provide adequate reduction for the porcelain build-up. Also we do not recommend the trough (or gutter) shoulder because the outer most edge may not be detected when scanned.

  • No Feather edges
  • No Troughs or gutter shoulders
  • No Sharp 90 degree shoulders
  • No Undercuts
  • Inadequate occlusal Clearance (under 1mm)
  • Inadequate Labial reduction (under 1mm)
